U-Haul Moving Tips: Choosing The Right Size

Choosing the wrong truck size means multiple trips, wasted money, and added stress. At A-American Self Storage, we’ve helped Texans move since 1970. Here’s how to get it right the first time.

Quick Truck Size Guide

10′ Mini Mover – Studio or 1 bedroom

  • Perfect for small apartments and dorm rooms
  • Holds 1-2 rooms of furniture

15′ Truck – 1-2 bedrooms

  • Ideal for small apartments
  • Fits 3-4 rooms of furniture

17′ Truck – 2-3 bedrooms

  • Great for family homes
  • Holds 5-6 rooms of furniture

20′ Truck – 3-4 bedrooms

  • Larger homes with appliances
  • Fits 7-8 rooms of furniture

26′ Super Mover – 4+ bedrooms

  • Whole house moves
  • Holds 10+ rooms of furniture

3 Simple Tips

1. Make a List Walk through every room and count your furniture pieces. Don’t forget garage items, outdoor furniture, and items in storage.

2. When in Doubt, Size Up It’s better to have extra space than to make two trips. The cost difference is minimal.

3. Mattresses Take More Space King and queen mattresses need to stand upright against walls, which limits other packing options.

Quick Formula

Number of Rooms x 150 = Cubic Feet Needed

Example: 5 rooms x 150 = 750 cubic feet (15-17′ truck)
